Atlanta Schools Participate in LearningSoft’s Indigo Learning System Pilot Project
With addition of Atlanta schools, powerful student computing and assessment devices pilots reach 2,000 students
Pembroke Pines, Fla. – Jan. 25, 2007 – LearningSoft LLC, the producer of affordable, wireless computing platforms for education, is partnering with two schools in Atlanta, GA, and the Jacoby Group in a pilot project that will place LearningSoft’s Indigo Learning System in these schools.
Walden Middle School and John Hope Elementary School are the first two schools in Atlanta to participate in the pilot project. The Indigo Learning System employs handheld devices and a wireless network with powerful assessment software to allow educators to create seamless standards-based assessments. The handhelds also function as interactive instructional content players, e-book readers, teacher-limited web browsers and text editors. The Atlanta pilot project is fully funded through a grant from the Jacoby Group, a portfolio of ventures that includes education technology, environmental research, and Atlantic Station, one of the city's premier live-work-play communities. The project will consist of the handheld computers plus wireless access points for each classroom, software, training and support, all offered at no cost to participating schools.
“Like the Jacoby group, Atlantic Station is committed to making a difference in communities,” said Jim Jacoby, CEO of Jacoby Development, Inc. “This project invests in the future by helping school children to succeed now.”
The first phase of the project, which will be implemented throughout the winter of 2007, will place the system’s handheld devices in the hands of approximately 800 students at the two schools. Subsequent phases will expand the use of the handheld devices to other schools in the area.
“We have had great success with our pilot in Hawaii, in fact, we have just added an additional school to that pilot as well as additional students in our first pilot school,” said David Cole, CEO of LearningSoft. “The usage information we are learning from our pilots is imperative to our continued development of the devices.”
The Atlanta pilot adds to the successful pilot already in place in the district of Hawaii. LearningSoft recently upgraded their pilot in Kailua-Kona adding additional classrooms at Konawaena Elementary School and adding fourth and fifth grade classrooms at Kealakehe Elementary School. When complete, these additions will bring the number of students using Indigo in pilots to 2,000.
